Understanding Lines & Wrinkles

Lines and wrinkles are a natural part of facial movement and ageing. Over time, repeated muscle activity, skin thinning, collagen changes and environmental exposure can contribute to the development of visible lines.
At PCM, we provide doctor-led consultations to assess facial anatomy, movement patterns and skin quality. Where clinically appropriate, we may discuss available non-surgical treatment options aimed at softening the appearance of certain dynamic facial lines.
We focus on preserving natural expression while supporting informed decision-making.

Understanding Lines & Wrinkles

Facial lines are commonly divided into two categories:

Dynamic lines

These appear with facial movement, for example frowning, smiling or raising the eyebrows.

Static lines

These may remain visible at rest and are often influenced by skin quality, collagen loss and long-term muscle activity.

  • Forehead lines
  • Lines around the eyes
  • Chin dimpling

  • Frown lines between the brows
  • Perioral lines

Consultation & Assessment

Consultation & Individualised Assessment

A consultation with a PCM doctor is required before any treatment is considered. There are no exceptions to this process.

01

Assess facial anatomy and muscle activity

02

Discuss your concerns and expectations

03

Explore non-procedural options, including the option of no treatment

04

Assess suitability, including medical history and medications

05

Discuss potential risks, limitations and realistic outcomes

06

Provide written and verbal information to support informed consent

Where prescription-only medicines are considered, a consultation is required each time a prescription is issued. If treatment is not clinically appropriate, we will advise you accordingly.

Treatment Considerations

For some individuals, carefully administered non-surgical procedures may temporarily reduce the appearance of certain dynamic lines by modifying muscle activity.
Treatment decisions are individualised and depend on:
  • Facial structure and anatomy
  • Strength and pattern of muscle movement
  • Skin quality
  • Age-related changes
  • Personal preferences
  • Overall health
Results vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed. Some lines may improve, while others may require alternative approaches such as skin therapies, collagen-stimulating treatments, or no intervention.

Risks and Side Effects

All medical procedures carry risks. Possible side effects may include:
  • Temporary redness, swelling or bruising
  • Eyelid or brow drooping
  • Headache
  • Unintended muscle effects
  • Asymmetry
  • Allergic or adverse reactions
  • Temporary changes in facial expression
Most side effects are temporary, but complications can occur. Full risk information will be discussed during consultation to support informed decision-making.

    Suitability & Psychological Assessment

Medical practitioners are required to assess suitability, including screening for unrealistic expectations, body image concerns or underlying psychological conditions that may affect decision-making. PCM may decline to recommend treatment where it is not in your best clinical interest.

    Patients Under 18

PCM does not provide services to patients under the age of 18.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The following information is provided for general educational purposes only. It does not constitute medical advice. Please consult a qualified medical practitioner to discuss your individual circumstances.
Are lines and wrinkles a medical concern?
Not necessarily. Facial lines are a normal part of ageing and expression. Whether any treatment is clinically appropriate is determined through individual assessment with a registered medical practitioner. Many lines do not require intervention.
Do I need a consultation before treatment is considered?
Yes. A consultation with a PCM doctor is required before any treatment can be discussed or planned. Your doctor will assess your facial anatomy, skin quality, medical history and goals before determining whether any approach is clinically appropriate.
What types of lines can be assessed?
Consultations may address dynamic lines (those that appear with movement) and static lines (those visible at rest). Common areas include the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes, and around the mouth. Treatment priorities are determined individually.
Is this service available to patients under 18?
No. PCM does not provide services to patients under the age of 18.
    What are the potential risks?
All medical procedures carry risk. Possible effects may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, headache or asymmetry. Less common effects include eyelid or brow drooping, unintended muscle effects or adverse reactions. Full risk information is discussed during consultation.
    Can you guarantee results?
No. Individual outcomes vary depending on anatomy, muscle activity, skin quality and other clinical factors. No specific result can be guaranteed. Your doctor will discuss realistic expectations based on your individual assessment.
What if I decide not to proceed?
You are under no obligation to proceed at any point. Choosing not to proceed is always a valid and supported option. PCM's role is to provide accurate, balanced information so you can make a decision that is right for you.
